CONCEPT

Illustrator JUN OSON,
known for his colorful and pop images,
will have his first major solo exhibition
in Japan in four years.

From October 30, 2020 to February 4, 2021, DIESEL ART GALLERY will hold D_I_S_T_A_N_C_E, the first major solo exhibition in Japan in four years of the works of JUN OSON. An illustrator who works in a wide range of fields, OSON’s works include book cover design, book illustration and product design, mainly for advertising and animations.

OSON, based in Kamakura, Japan, is active in a variety of mediums. He draws for NHK ETV's television show, Ahare! Meisaku-kun and has illustrated a “Tokyo Metro Manners Poster” for the Metro Cultural Foundation. He also designed tour merchandise for musician Gen Hoshino's POP VIRUS, and continues to illustrate for TV Asahi's Gekirea-san wo Tsuretekita.
In recent years, he has been focusing on creating original artwork and has shown work in a solo exhibition at the Moods Art Museum in Beijing.

D_I_S_T_A_N_C_E will feature more than 20 new paintings, including large-scale pieces. In addition to the works on display, character figurines, T-shirts, badges, and other related merchandise made specifically for the exhibition will be available for sale.

Artist Statement
The spread of the new coronavirus made me fearful of this unknown virus, but at the same time, it made me think about the distances between myself and others.
“We must not get close to others”—I’ve become so conscious of this idea that my heart skips a beat when I watch old movies and see strangers interacting closely with each other.
In order to avoid contact with others, new forms of interaction have grown out of this situation, like online meetings and internet streaming.
The internet has always emphasized the individual, but I feel that the novel coronavirus has furthered this emphasis.
However, humans are social creatures so I believe an individual is too weak to survive on their own.
As the emphasis continues to be placed on the individual, I can imagine that each of our existence will feel slightly less significant.
Regardless of our intentions, the distances between ourselves and others (both physically and mentally) are formed within a bigger flow.
But I believe that if we have the internet, we will be able to survive.
