AKIYOSHI MISHIMA
AUG 30, 2008 – NOV 9, 2008

Akiyoshi MISHIMA is an up-and-coming young creator. He works greatly on his own solo-project, while working on various creative activities including commercial works, fine art works and VJ as a member of an artwork group ENLIGHTENMENT. His creativity with borderless image has a great control over colors and shapes, and keeps drawing high degree of attention from art experts to young people hoping for the new generation in arts.

As a reality of third-generation after the war, MISHIMA works with his own concept, “the aggressive harmonization in different cultures.” In his creativie works, MISHIMA tries to absorb different languages, histories and images from every culture, and to capture the possibilities of the integration by restructuring them. This attitude might result from the anomalous existence of Japan, which leads the globalism as the future vision of the world.

In this exhibition [Elements], MISHIMA attempts to consider the possibility of the world harmonization, inspired by the traditional Chinese philosophy Wu Xing (five phases). Wu Xing describes everything with five elements; Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The controlling idea of Wu Xing is the cycles of generation of "Water destroys Fire, Fire destroys Metal, Metal destroys Wood, Wood destroys Earth, and Earth destroys Water." Focusing on the interactive relationships between phenomena, MISHIMA creates an image for a vision of the future world by those five figural images and an experimental installation as an embodiment of the idea.
