LA-based Artist Erin D. Garcia is to have his first Tokyo solo exhibition in 5 years at DIESEL ART GALLERY.

DIESEL ART GALLERY presents Super Silhouette, a solo exhibition by LA-based artist Erin D. Garcia, from August 13th (Sat) to November 10th (Thu), 2022.

Garcia began his career as an artist following several years of touring as a musician, producer, and composer. Since his first solo exhibition in 2012, his focus shifted into the art field, actively exhibiting works in Los Angeles, San Francisco, London, Berlin, Tokyo, and other major cities around the world. Garcia's lively drawings take shape through the repetition of layers of color and line. Deceptively simple forms always emerge as something more than a mere predetermined harmony, due to their unique color palette and process of using bold strokes against the space.

While the title of this exhibition, Super Silhouette, refers to the transcendent silhouette he depicts, it was also inspired by modified motorsports cars that were once popular in the late 80s and 90s. The Super Silhouette cars were known for retaining the originally produced car’s silhouette on the outside, but containing plentiful modifications on the inside, to make them competition-ready. In the past, Garcia has titled his exhibitions Grand Prix and Skyline, also in reference to racing, but we may feel a distance between the speedy, powerful images these words invoke in our imagination, and the images of Garcia's work that we see in front of us today. This gap represents Garcia's style of creation, in which even if a visualized silhouette or technique exists, the content of such a silhouette is unbounded and free. Compared to his past works, the works exhibited here contain more figurative motifs - flowers, plants, fruits, etc. - and make use of composition similar to that of still life paintings. These still lives, may capture one particular moment, but they alter our senses of motion and time though the use of minimal brushstrokes.

At the exhibition, over 40 works from Garcia’s Super Silhouette series will be on display and for sale.

Additionally, candies made in collaboration with art candy store papabubble will be available for purchase at the venue. To commemorate the Super Silhouette exhibition, products made in collaboration with DIESEL and a giveaway of exhibition-exclusive standby images will also be available.

On Erin D. Garcia’s “Super Silhouette”

Erin D. Garcia’s Super Silhouette is a collection of pieces that appear deceptively simple. First glance gives the viewer a sense of serenity: the show feels like a comprehensive exploration of ‘still life’ that pays careful attention to all meanings of the word ‘still’.

But if we look any longer than that first moment, we can’t help but question how so much detail can be captured with such minimal brush strokes, how blossoms don’t merely sit but seem to burst from vases. These ‘still lifes’ may capture one moment but they alter our senses of motion and time.

Maybe the show’s name is a clue. ‘Super Silhouette’ is a powerful class of race car, and previous work by Garcia has given nod to motorsports before.

In Super Silhouette we see botanical objects imbued with all the motion and speed of their namesakes, while lying paradoxically still.

Erin D. Garcia was born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1979. After moving to Los Angeles, he sold hand-made zines on the street and did freelance design for Stussy and the American Institute of Architects. After years as a touring musician, producer, and composer, Garcia had his first solo art show in 2012.

Additional shows in San Francisco and London followed, and his first large-scale mural in Palm Springs.

Garcia's work is a joyful exploration of shape, color, and process populated by plants and flowers, rhythmic figures, and colorful gradients that search where our capacity for abstraction intersects or conflicts with the sensory desire for specificity.

Garcia has exhibited in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Berlin, Miami, Atlanta, New York, and Los Angeles alongside installations and projects for Pulse Art Fair, Facebook, Oakley, Stadium Goods, Adidas, Beams, United Arrows, Ace Hotels, Ginza Six, Vans, Sogo Seibu, and Moog.
