The world is rotten, corrupt and bankrupt and it is not the time to explain the political situation in friendly cartoons.

DIESEL DENIM GALLERY AOYAMA is presenting the first solo exhibition of Mathias, “ALL ABOUT DEMOCRACY” showcasing his best works from cartoons and illustrations for newspapers and magazines. Mathias also created new works in print and film exclusively for this exhibition.

Mathias draws well-known people in power like presidents and politicians, and develops stories of those characters based upon the current world situation. The cartoons drawn by his keen observation on social circumstances lampoon the current democracy, but also his hope for a better world without poverty, environmental pollution and justice for all can be seen.

Mathias makes realistic digital illustrations on his laptop. He works everywhere, at home, in the train, in restaurants and soon in Tokyo.

BIOGRAPHY

Mathias was born in 1970 in Horst, the Netherlands. As a young kid he was always busy with a pencil and paper drawing comics. After he studied advertising, he went to the School of Fine Arts in Enschede, the Netherlands. During his study, he developed himself into an audio-visual artist focusing in camerawork and video editing. He left the illustration path for a few years, and started to work for tv stations and produced documentaries, commercials and animations.

In 2006, he opened a weblog to publish his illustration works and this resulted in projects offered by some important Dutch and Belgian magazines like; Vrij Nederland and Knack Magazine. During the summer of 2008 Mathias made six covers for the Belgian tv-guide ‘Focus-Knack’.

Since 2006, Mathias’ works is published in Vrij Nederland, Knack Magazine, Le Vif l’Express Decouvertes, Nrc Next and Indymedia.be. In 2008 and 2009 Mathias’ works appeared in the daily newspaper, NRC Next.

After a career at Wieden + Kennedy Tokyo as an account executive of Nike, Kimiko Mitani Woo follows her dreams working with“Asian art and design”. Having worked on a few art projects such as Akasaka Art Flower 08, the artist management for Nam June Paik Art Center Opening, she established MW Company in February 2009 and started working in art producing in Tokyo and Shanghai. The main role of the company is to expose young and upcoming artists who represent a unique and non-traditional perspective of the world. By doing so, MW Company provides and encourages opportunities and development of the East Asian art scene..

The projects for 2009 are: the curation for DIESEL DENIM GALLERY AOYAMA and GYRE ART WINDOW throughout the year, guest curation of JENKINS at CCC in Shizuoka, PR for CREAM YOKOHAMA International Festival for Arts and Media 2009. Currently, she has been preparing for upcoming Shanghai project in 2010.
