Do the unsettled poses signify the decline of humanity or a new omen?

Yukino Yamanaka's new solo exhibition will be held at DIESEL ART GALLERY

DIESEL ART GALLERY will be hosting artist Yukino Yamanaka's solo exhibition "POSE" from December 2, 2023 (Sat) to January 16, 2024 (Tue), curated by gallery CON_ based in the East side of Tokyo Japan.

Yukino Yamanaka has meticulously focused on both the contours of humans as physical entities and their conditions as phenomena, portraying the amorphous and non-human entities that lurk within this interstice. From her early works, Yukino Yamanaka has consistently employed human figures as her central motifs. Her artistic style has transitioned from a representational depiction to abstract renderings utilizing random strokes. The canvas exhibits blanks reminiscent of whiteouts devoid of information, languidly flowing liquids in bodily crevices, and egoistic expressions and postures evoking selfies or artist portraits. By seamlessly integrating these elements across the canvas, she captures the very process of metamorphosis from the "self" to an ambiguous "other," elucidating our evolving visage as an entity inchoate and diverging from the conventional human archetype.

The title of this exhibition, "POSE," not only refers to the posture of models in paintings and sculptures but also to pretenses and superficial attitudes. As we take our place at the modern feast where countless images are generated and displayed, we are pushed by human desires and machine algorithms, continuously adopting undetermined poses. What is this unfamiliar feeling, this unseen entity outside our perception indicating? Is it the decay of humanity or the harbinger of a new situation? Through 12 new paintings and her first sculptural work, this exhibition questions the relationship between paintings and space in the modern age, approaching the authenticity of painting and the otherness that resides within. As the essence of humanity is being questioned, come experience what we seek and perceive in the existence of painting.

The exhibition will not only display and sell new works but also offer limited-edition merchandise made for the exhibition and products from a collaboration with DIESEL.
