DIESEL ART GALLERY(ディーゼル・アート・ギャラリー)では、2024年5月18日(土)から7月3日(水)まで、アーティスト水戸部七絵(ミトべ・ナナエ)による個展「People Have The Power」を開催します。


「People Have The Power」は、ロックスターやミュージシャンをモチーフとした作品群を展示する水戸部七絵の人気シリーズの第5弾となります。これまでに「Rock is Dead」、「War is not over」、「Let’s Have a Dream!」、「Sit-In」と題した展示を開催し、ロックの象徴や音楽の力に焦点を当てた作品を発表してきました。


「People Have The Power」は、個々の人々が持つ力や、集団としての力、アートや音楽が社会変革に果たす役割など、鑑賞者に深い思考を促す機会を与えるでしょう。


本展覧会では新作の展示・販売をはじめ、DIESELとコラボレーションによるTシャツや関連グッズも販売します。


CONCEPT 

この世を去ったスターたちは、時代が変わるごとにニュースや社会的問題に取り上げられ、再考察されます。これまで絶対的、または普遍的なものであった権威や常識、定説までもが変わるのです。BLM以降、ジェンダーや様々な人種、植民地の歴史など、マイノリティ間の構造は、ポートレートを常に描いてきた水戸部にとって、重要なトピックとなります。


「People Have The Power」では、ベトナム反戦や黒人差別、世間の偏見と戦った人物や、平和を求める活動に大きな足跡を残した人々が登場します。こうした戦う人々を描いた作品の多くは、実際に直接対象となる顔を見て描いたのではなく、メディアに登場するスターや著名人のイメージを間接的に描写したものです。そのため、雑誌の表紙やレコード・ジャケットのような、メディア経由の複製物としてのモチーフが描かれています。


会場は闘いや情熱を表す赤色で構成され、水戸部が直接的に「落書き的」なペインティングを施し、空間全体が渋谷のストリート・カルチャーと交差するように演出されています。


音楽とアートによる非暴力的な戦いを表現したDJブースによるインスタレーション作品は、レコードや楽器が散乱し、まるで喧嘩や抗争の場面を想起させます。時に悲惨な状況を伝えるものでもありますが、抵抗する人々の側に立つポジティブなメッセージとなり得ます。


A New Space for Discovering Books, Created with Tokyo’s Leading Bookstores and Publishers




DIESEL ART GALLERY will present its first book-themed exhibition, DIESEL ART GALLERY BOOK MARKET, from January 23 to April 15, 2026.


This exhibition is a collaborative project with a selection of distinctive bookstores and publishers that shape Tokyo’s cultural scene. A wide range of books and related works will be exhibited and available for purchase, spanning genres such as art, photography, fashion, design, music, graphics, subculture, and underground culture.


The gallery space is organized into individual booths, each curated by a participating bookstore or publisher from their own unique perspective. Through these diverse and expressive worlds, visitors are invited to freely explore different approaches to books and experience new discoveries and inspirations.

Bohemians’ Guild is a rare-book store in Jimbocho operated by Natsume-Books, a company with over a century of history. Doris is a fantasy-oriented antiquarian bookstore located in Uguisudani, Taito Ward, Tokyo. Centered on themes of aestheticism and the fantastical, the shop aims to curate a selection that resonates with those who share a particular sensibility. Its core focus includes fin-de-siècle art, the Pre-Raphaelites, aestheticism, Dada and Surrealism, Tatsuhiko Shibusawa and the cultural figures surrounding him, ball-jointed dolls, Gothic culture, and eroticism. The collection ranges from classic works of fantasy painting and literature to rare limited editions and lavishly produced books.

Founded as an online store in 2010, flotsam books opened its physical shop in January 2020 in Daitabashi, Tokyo. Specializing in photobooks, the shop offers a carefully curated selection of new and used titles—both Japanese and international—guided by an independent editorial perspective. The relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere ensures that every visit brings new discoveries. The space also hosts regular exhibitions by artists, creating a place for interaction between creators and their audiences.

GASBOOK is a project launched by Gas As Interface in 1996 as a medium dedicated to introducing global creativity and collecting new ideas in art and design from around the world.
In its early years, instead of traditional “books,” the project released original packages—such as T-shirts and DVDs—featuring works by international artists. Starting with GASBOOK 01 GROOVISIONS published in 2002, the format shifted to spotlighting one (or sometimes two) creator(s) per issue, continuing through Issue 37.
Over the years, GASBOOK has featured a diverse range of creators, including Mike Mills, Jun Takahashi, MADSAKI, Jonathan Zawada, YOSHIROTTEN, and Yuni Yoshida. For many, it became their first published monograph.

Studio photography and distinctive Q&A interviews, consistent across all titles, are key signatures of the series. Even today, GASBOOK continues to serve as a platform that introduces pioneering artists whose work remains influential across disciplines, roviding enduring references for contemporary creative practice.

SUPER LABO is a Tokyo-based publisher specializing in photobooks. Founded in 2009 by Yasunori Hoki, it has collaborated with numerous internationally acclaimed artists, including Petra Collins, Ed Templeton, and Jim Goldberg, and actively organizes events in major cities around the world. It currently operates the concept store (bookstore + gallery) “SUPER LABO STORE TOKYO” in Tokyo’s Jimbocho district, where all photobooks published by SUPER LABO are presented alongside a selection of exclusive items. The space also regularly hosts exhibitions and events featuring invited international artists.
